Hotel housekeeping productivity in 2026: the numbers
HotelData.com’s labor report for the first half of 2026 draws on about 5,000 US hotels. Hours per occupied room fell year over year in every month of the half, by 3.5% at select-service hotels and 3.1% at full-service hotels. Every hourly housekeeping position analyzed needed fewer minutes per occupied room than a year earlier.
Demand rose too. HotelData’s companion profitability report put occupancy at 67.9% for the half, up from 66.8%. One analysis of the same data notes the productivity gains narrowed in the second quarter, so the easy minutes may already have been found.
The hotel housekeeping staffing shortage: why hotels still can’t hire
Faster rooms have not closed the hiring gap. In the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s survey of 282 hoteliers, run from December 2024 to January 2025, housekeeping was the most-cited shortage at 38%, ahead of front desk roles at 26%. A March 2026 AHLA survey of hotel owners, as reported, found more than half still understaffed even though about 70% were raising pay.
The industry’s answer is changing shape. HVS’s October 2026 market report describes outsourced staffing as becoming an industry norm and expects that structure to hold through the rest of the decade, following a shift toward contract labor it noted in September.
What it means for Charleston hotels
Charleston runs fuller than the national figures. Colliers put market occupancy at about 80.3% in the second quarter of 2026, with upper-upscale and luxury rates above $400 a night. At that occupancy a housekeeping shortfall shows up the same day, as rooms that are not ready at check-in.
More rooms are coming. The Post and Courier reported in October that 3,383 approved hotel rooms are not yet built, and the city’s draft Peninsula Plan recommends considering a change to the 50-room limit on new hotels south of Calhoun Street, with a public forum in November. That is a proposal, not a decision, but every added room is another one to clean from the same labor pool.
How hotels are covering housekeeping now
The choices are hiring in house, agency temps, or an outsourced housekeeping partner. Whichever you use, run it on numbers:
Fluffy staffs, schedules and supervises the housekeeping team rather than sending an agency roster that changes every week. Housekeepers are trained to OSHA and industry standards before they work a room, a supervisor inspects every room against the 75-point standard, and timestamped completion photos show in your FluffyOS portal as the day runs.
